Dry vs. Wet Boiling Point

Each DOT grade lists two boiling points because brake fluid's performance changes as it ages. The 'dry' boiling point is measured on fresh, unopened fluid straight from the container. The 'wet' boiling point is measured after the fluid has absorbed a standardized amount of water, which is roughly what glycol-based fluid picks up from ambient humidity over normal use, since brake systems are not fully sealed from moisture.

Because DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based, they are hygroscopic -- they draw in water over time, and that absorbed water can boil under the heat of hard or repeated braking, turning to compressible vapor in the lines and producing the soft, spongy pedal feel known as brake fade. This is why manufacturers recommend flushing and replacing glycol-based brake fluid on a regular schedule even if it hasn't visibly degraded, and why the wet boiling point, not the dry one, is the more realistic real-world safety margin.

Why DOT 5 Cannot Be Mixed With the Others

DOT 5 is chemically different from every other DOT grade: it is silicone-based rather than glycol-based, which makes it hydrophobic (water-repellent) instead of hygroscopic, and it does not damage vehicle paint the way spilled glycol fluid can. That same chemical difference means DOT 5 is not miscible with DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5.1 -- mixing them can cause the fluids to separate and trap moisture and air in the brake lines, leading to corrosion and an unpredictable, spongy pedal.

DOT 5.1, despite its name suggesting a relationship to DOT 5, is actually a glycol-based fluid with a high boiling point similar to DOT 5's, and it mixes normally with DOT 3 and DOT 4. Because of the mixing hazard, DOT 5 is mainly used in vehicles designed for it from the factory -- the US armed forces have standardized on silicone brake fluid since the 1990s -- rather than as a drop-in upgrade for glycol-based systems.
