SAE J300 classifies engine oil viscosity with a two-number code like 5W-30: the number before 'W' rates cold-flow performance in winter, while the second number rates viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius operating temperature. History & Origin
The Society of Automotive Engineers began classifying motor oil viscosity in the early 20th century, when it became clear that manufacturers were marketing the same oil under inconsistent labels -- the same product might be sold as a "heavy" automotive oil by one company and a "light" oil by another, leaving buyers with no reliable way to compare products. SAE's viscosity classification work, which became the J300 standard, gave the industry a shared, testable scale instead.
For decades, engine oils were single-grade, offering good performance at only one temperature range. Multigrade oils -- the 5W-30 style ratings seen today -- became possible with the development of viscosity index improver additives, polymer compounds that let a single oil resist thinning at high temperature while still flowing well when cold. That single innovation let one oil product serve both winter starts and summer highway driving, replacing the need to swap oils seasonally.
Reading the Two-Number Code
The 'W' in a grade like 5W-30 stands for Winter, not weight, and the number before it comes from cold-cranking and pumping tests that measure how easily the oil flows and can be pumped through the engine at low temperatures -- a lower W number means better cold-weather starting. The number after the dash measures kinematic viscosity at 100 degrees Celsius, roughly engine operating temperature, with a higher number indicating thicker oil that maintains a stronger protective film under heat and load.
Because the two numbers are tested independently, a multigrade oil is really certifying two separate performance claims in one label: how it behaves cold and how it behaves hot. Manufacturers specify the grade for a given engine based on its design tolerances and climate, which is why using a non-recommended grade can affect both cold starting and long-term wear protection.
