NHTSA guidance describes four car seat stages: rear-facing until reaching the seat's height/weight limit, forward-facing with harness from about age 4 to 7, belt-positioning booster from about age 8 to 12, and seat belt alone once it fits properly. Transitions follow the seat's manufacturer limits, not age alone.
