Deep Color and Lossless Audio
HDMI 1.3 doubled the TMDS clock from 165 MHz to 340 MHz, raising total bandwidth from 4.95 Gbps to 10.2 Gbps -- headroom used mostly for higher refresh rates and deeper color rather than higher resolution. Deep Color extended HDMI 1.0's 8-bit-per-channel (24-bit) color to 10, 12, or 16 bits per channel (up to 48-bit total), allowing smoother color gradients with less banding, particularly useful for high-end displays and professional color grading.
On the audio side, 1.3 added bitstream pass-through support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio -- the lossless surround formats used on Blu-ray discs -- letting an AV receiver decode them directly rather than relying on the player. The same version introduced the smaller Type C "Mini" HDMI connector for camcorders and other compact devices, plus wide-gamut xvYCC color support.
