Peppers were domesticated in Mesoamerica well before most other garden vegetables on this list -- archaeological evidence from Mexico's Tehuacan Valley shows domesticated Capsicum annuum seeds dating to around 6000 BC, with genetic and linguistic evidence pointing to central-east Mexico as the origin more than 6,500 years ago. Five separate Capsicum species were independently domesticated across Mesoamerica and South America starting roughly 10,000 years ago.
Aztec and Mayan farmers had been cultivating peppers for millennia by the time Spanish colonization brought the plant to Europe after 1492, after which it spread rapidly through Asia and Africa -- fast enough that peppers became embedded in cuisines like Indian and Thai cooking within a few centuries, despite having no pre-Columbian presence there.
Common Growing Mistakes
Cold soil is the single most common pepper-growing mistake: peppers are a warm-season crop that stalls or rots when planted before soil temperatures reach roughly 60 degrees F, and cold, waterlogged soil specifically interferes with the plant's ability to move calcium into developing fruit.
That calcium disruption is also the real driver of blossom end rot.
