Routine brass care starts with warm water and mild dish soap, then commercial brass polish rubbed in circular motions for shine. Stubborn tarnish may need very fine 0000 steel wool, while lacquering with a clear protective coat after cleaning with acetone or mineral spirits slows future tarnish significantly.
Routine Cleaning
Wash with warm water and mild dish soap using a soft cloth, then rinse and dry thoroughly to prevent water spotting.
Apply Brass Polish
Rub a small amount of commercial brass polish onto the surface in small circular motions using a soft, clean cloth.
Remove Stubborn Tarnish
For heavy tarnish, carefully use very fine 0000 steel wool or 600-plus grit wet/dry sandpaper, then re-polish the surface.
Prepare for Lacquer (Optional)
Wipe the entire surface with acetone, mineral spirits, or denatured alcohol to remove all oils and polish residue before lacquering.
Apply Protective Lacquer
Apply a clear lacquer coat to lock in the polished finish and block air, humidity, and fingerprints, the leading causes of tarnish.
What Brass Is and How Long It's Been Used
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, typically about two-thirds copper to one-third zinc, though the ratio varies by intended use. It is one of the oldest alloys worked by humans: copper-zinc alloys appear in small numbers at sites across West Asia and the eastern Mediterranean from as early as the 3rd millennium BC, well before metalworkers understood zinc as a distinct element.
Deliberate, large-scale brass production became established under the Roman Empire, which used it widely for coinage and military equipment such as helmets. By the later part of the 1st millennium BC, brass use had already spread across a wide geographic range, from Britain and Spain in the west to Iran and India in the east, making it one of the most widely adopted metal alloys of the ancient world.
The Chemistry Behind Brass Tarnish
Tarnishing is a form of oxidation: the copper in brass reacts with sulfur-containing compounds in the air to form a thin layer of copper sulfide, which appears as a dull brown or black film. Left exposed outdoors, this layer can react further into copper carbonate, the blue-green patina known as verdigris. Brass corrodes especially readily in the presence of moisture, chlorides, ammonia, and certain acids, all of which speed the reaction.
Because tarnishing depends on the metal's surface being exposed to air and moisture, sealing that surface off is what slows it down. A layer of lacquer or wax forms a physical barrier between the brass and the atmosphere, blocking the oxygen and moisture the corrosion reaction needs; once that barrier is scratched or worn through, tarnishing resumes at the exposed spot.
