Pencil Hardness Grades
Authority: Conventional H/B grading scale (no single governing standard)
Pencil hardness runs on a scale from 9H (hardest, lightest mark) through HB and F (middle) to 9B (softest, darkest mark), based on the ratio of clay to graphite in the core. There is no single standards body enforcing exact equivalence between manufacturers, so the same grade can vary slightly by brand.

History & Origin
The modern pencil-hardness system depends on a technique developed by French scientist Nicolas-Jacques Conté in 1795: mixing powdered graphite with clay and firing it, so that a higher clay ratio produces a harder, lighter-marking core and more graphite produces a softer, darker one. The "H" and "B" letter designations (for Hard and Black) were already in written use by at least 1814, and the Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth company has claimed credit for popularizing the H/B/F lettering system, with "F" said to originate from company founder Franz Hardtmuth's initial.
Importantly, there has never been one single international standard that all manufacturers calibrate against -- two pencils graded "2B" by different companies can produce noticeably different marks, since each manufacturer sets its own graphite-to-clay ratios. American pencils sometimes use a separate numeric scale instead (the common yellow #2 pencil corresponds approximately to HB), but even that equivalence isn't universally followed.
