4×5 Large Format Sheet Film (ISO 1010)

Direct Answer

4×5 Sheet Film (standardized under ISO 1010) is the benchmark large format photographic film standard, measuring exactly 3.90 × 4.90 inches (99.0 × 124.5 mm nominal for 4×5 inch film holders) with a massive 12,325 mm² active negative area (~14.3× larger than 35mm full frame). Loaded individually into dual-sided dark slides, it features edge notch codes for emulsion identification in total darkness.

The Darkroom Notch Code Rule

Because sheet film must be loaded into film holders in pitch-black darkness, manufacturers cut unique notch codes on the short edge. When holding the sheet vertically with the notches in the top-right corner (or bottom-left corner horizontally), the emulsion (light-sensitive side) is facing the photographer.
