Arca-Swiss 38mm Dovetail Standard
Direct Answer
The Arca-Swiss Dovetail (introduced by Arca-Swiss Phototechnik in the 1990s) is the undisputed global quick-release standard in professional photography. Featuring a 38.0 mm wide aluminum plate with precision 45-degree chamfered edges, it clamps into screw-knob or lever-release tripod heads with rigid mechanical zero-play locking.

The L-Bracket Innovation
The Arca-Swiss profile enabled the invention of the custom camera L-bracket. Instead of flopping a ball head 90 degrees over to shoot vertical portrait orientations (which moves camera weight off-center and destabilizes the tripod legs), the photographer unclamps the L-bracket and remounts the camera vertically, keeping the center of gravity directly over the tripod apex.
