History & Origin
Golf balls have changed materials three times over. Early "featherie" balls, used from roughly the 14th century into the mid-1800s, were hand-stitched leather pouches stuffed tightly with boiled feathers -- expensive, hard to make round, and ruined by wet weather. In 1848 the "gutty" arrived: a single-piece ball molded from gutta-percha, a rubber-like tree sap, which was far cheaper and more durable.
Dimples emerged almost by accident. Golfers noticed that older, nicked-up gutties flew farther than smooth new ones, so makers began deliberately roughening ball surfaces. William Taylor patented a systematic dimple pattern in 1908 after the aerodynamic benefit became clear -- dimples reduce drag and generate lift, letting a golf ball travel much farther than a smooth sphere hit the same way. Modern balls typically carry 300-500 dimples arranged in symmetric patterns refined over decades of testing.
Why the Rules Cap Distance and Require Symmetry
The USGA and R&A don't just limit a golf ball's size and weight -- they also cap how far it's allowed to fly and how consistently it must behave. Under the Overall Distance Standard, a ball tested under controlled conditions cannot travel beyond a fixed limit (with a small tolerance), and a separate Initial Velocity test caps how fast the ball may leave the clubface. Both rules exist to keep equipment gains from outpacing golf courses -- if balls could be engineered for unlimited distance, historic courses would become obsolete for competitive play.
Symmetry testing serves a different purpose: it confirms a ball flies the same way regardless of which side faces the clubface at address, so no ball can be manufactured to curve less or fly straighter in one orientation than another. Balls that fail either test are ruled non-conforming and barred from sanctioned competition.
