Maritime Signal Flags
The International Code of Signals assigns each letter flag a specific meaning when flown alone. Alfa means "diver down, keep clear"; Oscar means "man overboard"; Lima orders an immediate stop. Since a 1969 revision, flag Romeo carries no single-flag meaning and is used only as a numeral complement.
Morse Code
International Morse Code timing is based on the duration of one dot (unit time = 1T): a dash is 3T, intra-character space is 1T, letter space is 3T, and word space is 7T. SOS is transmitted as a single unspaced prosign (...---...).
NATO Phonetic Alphabet
The ICAO/NATO spelling alphabet assigns a code word to each letter to prevent confusion over radio: Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, Xray, Yankee, Zulu. Note the official spellings Alfa and Juliett, not the common English "Alpha" and "Juliet."
