International Morse Code timing is based on the duration of one dot (unit time = 1T): a dash is 3T, intra-character space is 1T, letter space is 3T, and word space is 7T. SOS is transmitted as a single unspaced prosign (...---...).

History & Origin
Morse code was developed alongside Samuel Morse's electrical telegraph in the 1830s, with significant contribution from his assistant Alfred Vail, who helped refine the character code actually used in practice. Morse sent the first telegraph message over a working line, from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, in 1844, and within a few decades telegraph networks using the code spanned continents, including a transatlantic cable completed in 1866.
The SOS distress signal, adopted by international agreement at the 1906 Berlin Radiotelegraphic Conference and effective from 1908, was chosen not as an acronym but for its unmistakable rhythm: three dots, three dashes, three dots, sent without the usual pause between characters. It became famous worldwide after RMS Titanic transmitted it during her sinking in 1912.
Why Morse Code Still Matters
Long after voice radio made telegraphy obsolete for most communication, Morse code persists because its underlying advantage never went away: a simple on-off signal can be understood through noise, weak signal strength, or interference where a voice transmission would be unintelligible. Amateur radio operators still use it (referred to as CW, for continuous wave) to make contacts across distances and conditions that would defeat voice communication entirely.
The code's timing is defined relative to a single base unit rather than fixed durations, which is why it scales cleanly to any sending speed: a dash is always three times the length of a dot, and spacing between letters and words follows the same proportional rule, whether the operator is sending at 5 words per minute or 40.
